Yoko Ogawa: The Diving Pool

Jun is walking out on the ten-meter board. He's wearing the rust-colored swimsuit I saw yesterday on the drying rack outside the window of his room. When he reaches the end of the board, he turns slowly; then, facing away from the water, he aligns his heels. Every muscle in his body is tensed, as if he were holding his breath. My previous experiences with Japanese short stories and novellas have mainly come from Haruki Murakami's fiction. Yoko Ogawa , another contemporary Japanese author, is a new acquaintance for me. The Diving Pool is a collection of three novellas, all set in Japan. In the title novella, a young girl, Aya, falls in love with her foster brother Jun as she spends her lonely afternoons watching him practice diving at a local pool. Her suppressed feelings force a darker side of her personality to the surface. In "Pregnancy Diary", a woman writes a diary about her sister's pregnancy and the strange effects that her sister's demands and cra

Diane Setterfield: The Thirteenth Tale

Twins, always together, always two. If it was normal in their world to be two, what would other people, who came not in twos but ones, seem like to them? We must seem like halves, the Missus mused. And she remembered a word, a strange word it had seemed at the time, that meant people who had lost parts of themselves. Amputees. That's what we are to them. Amputees. Diane Setterfield's first novel became a phenomenon and international bestseller. It clearly speaks to a distinct readership: us avid readers and bookworms. :) The protagonist, Margaret, describes her love of books and the hours she spends reading with a passion that is both familiar and instantly endearing. Plus she has a book lover's dream job: working in her father's bookstore, selling and organising all kinds of books from modern novels to extremely rare and ancient manuscripts. In addition, Margaret is a part-time writer and biographer. This brings her in contact with Vida Winter, a highly popular bu

Unni Drougge: Hella H:n tunnustukset

Kuten Jukka Petäjä Hesarin arvostelussa kirjoittaa, Unni Drouggen Hella H:n tunnustukset paljastaa heti alussa esikuvakseen Vladimir Nabokovin Lolitan . Venäläisklassikon sukupuoliroolit ovat kuitenkin vaihtuneet toisinpäin ruotsalaiskirjailijan romaanissa: keski-ikäisen miehen, Humbert Humbertin, on korvannut keski-ikäinen nainen, jonka nimessä on kuitenkin samanlaista toistoa: Hella Hell.

Colm Tóibín: The Blackwater Lightship

When Declan went to bed, the three women sat in the kitchen eating sandwiches. There was an uneasy peace between them; they chose topics with care and then moved cautiously, alert to the friction which even a stray word could cause. I've read many good things about this novel, including the fact that it was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1999. For some reason I was also fascinated by the name The Blackwater Lightship , it just sounded so strange and poetic. I didn't actually realize what the name referred to until about halfway through the novel: Blackwater is a town in Ireland and, in the novel, it has a lightship - a vessel with a light to guide ships, similar to a lighthouse. And, of course, an important symbol in the novel. The novel is set in Ireland in the early 1990s. Helen O'Doherty bids farewell to her husband and two children as they go on a trip to visit relatives. She is planning to follow them a few days later, but her plans change abruptly when a stra

Evelyn Waugh: Brideshead Revisited

My theme is memory, that winged host that soared about me one grey morning of war-time. These memories, which are my life - for we possess nothing certainly except the past - were always with me. The name Evelyn Waugh and especially his probably best-known novel Brideshead Revisited pop up now and again on websites and blogs about reading and literature. So I decided to find out what all the fuss is about and read the classic. I have to admit that I didn't enjoy the book very much. The novel was packed full of fancy metaphors and verbiage, suffocating manners and politeness. The entire plot seemed to vanish somewhere between the old-fashioned Englishness and the grand aristocratic mansion of Brideshead. The novel tells the story of the Marchmain family as seen through the eyes of Charles Ryder, a painter. Lord Marchmain is an unconventional man living with his mistress in Europe. Lady Marchmain controls and manipulates her four children ruthlessly. The eldest, Brideshead,

Kesäkirjat 2010

Netissä ja blogeissa on viime viikkoina pyörinyt erilaisia kesäkirjalistoja (mikä näiden kirjalistojen tekemisessä oikein viehättää?!). ;) Ajattelin laittaa itsekin kesällä luettavia kirjoja jonkinlaiseen järjestykseen. Käytännössähän tällaiset listat eivät ainakaan minulla pidä kovin hyvin, koska olen melko impulsiivinen lukija ja nappaan yleensä vain kirjaston/omasta hyllystäni jonkin romaanin sen kummempaa suunnittelematta. :) Mutta katsotaan sitten syksymmällä, olenko saanut näistä yhtään luettua. Eli kaksosia , Intiaa (kaksi ikuisesti kiinnostavaa teemaa), kesken jääneitä ja sekalaisia : Leena Parkkinen : Sinun jälkeesi, Max En ole tainnut lukea tästä yhtään huonoa arviota, mutta jotenkin olen itse vielä onnistunut välttämään koko romaanin. Tähän on tultava muutos! :) /EDIT: luettu! Diane Setterfield : Kolmastoista kertomus / The Thirteenth Tale Jotain vähän kevyempää (ymmärtääkseni..), mutta takakansi sai kiinnostuksen heräämään. Odottelee jo omassa hyllyssä englanniks
