Stephen Fry: Fryn aikakirjat

Voitte vapaasti pitää tätä kirjaa tieteistarinana, fantasiana tai eksoottisena matkakertomuksena. Onko maapallolla todella Stephen Fryn kaltaisia miehiä? Hyvänen aika, miten kummallisia jotkut ovat. Tunnustan olevani Stephen Fry -fani. Itseironinen, tietoviisas, kuivaa brittihuumoria ja kaksimielisyyksiä viljelevä, englannin kielen professorin näköinen kirjailija-näyttelijä-käsikirjoittaja-monitaituri on valtavan kiehtova ja viihdyttävä tyyppi. Fryn juontama QI on loistava visailuohjelma, jonka kanssa olen joutunut työnkin puolesta tekemisiin. Myös herran muistelmat ovat olleen lukulistalla jo pitkään ja jostain täysin irrationaalisesta päähänpistosta johtuen aloitin niiden lukemisen kolmannesta osasta, Fryn aikakirjoista . Kaikki kunnia Titia Schuurmanin sujuvalle suomennokselle, mutta Fryn kirjoja pitäisi oikeastaan lukea englanniksi. Fry on niitä harvoja yhä elossa olevia brittikirjailijoita, jotka osaavat käyttää kieltä agathachristiemäisen tai pgwodehousemaisen vanhanaikai

Romesh Gunesekara: Noontide Toll

They say this island of ours is the crossroads of the world. A lot of blah-blah about trade routes, sea lanes, strategic points, et cetera. But the more I see of it in this business, and the more people I meet, the more I understand the real truth of the matter. We live at one of those crazy junctions where everyone gets stranded not knowing which way to look, never mind go. All nodding like sleepyheads unable to ever completely wake up. Romesh Gunesekara's Noontide Toll was one of the Sri Lanka -related books that I read before and during a trip to the island. This novel was certainly a more bleak, sad and serious portrayal of the land than some of the others. Noontide Toll is a collection of short stories narrated by Vasantha, a van driver hired to drive aid workers, returning exiles, renovation constructors, tourists and others around Sri Lanka. Traces of the fairly recent civil war and the devastating tsunami are still present everywhere, and Vasantha's view of the

Agatha Christie: By the Pricking of My Thumbs

Her eyes opened, she looked at Tuppence and said, 'I see you're looking at the fireplace.' 'Oh. Was I?' said Tuppence, slightly startled. 'Yes. I wondered-' she leant forward and lowered her voice. '-Excuse me, was it your poor child?' I read By the Pricking of My Thumbs some time ago, but decided to write a review now during a week dedicated to detective fiction in this blog. The novel is part of the "Tommy and Tuppence mystery" series. Shamefully I must admit that I thought that Tommy and Tuppence were both men, kind of like Sherlock and Holmes. I didn't realize that Christie (the woman created Miss Marple, for goodness sake!) obviously had a male-female pair of detectives. Tommy and Tuppence are Thomas and Prudence Beresford, an ageing husband and wife with connections to the British intelligence services. In the beginning of the novel, they visit elderly Aunt Ada at the Sunny Ridge nursing home. Tuppence encounters an
